WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT REGRET
There’s something profound about Sunday mornings at church that often leads to deep reflection. This past Sunday, we talked about something that resonates with all of us: regret. It’s a feeling that can wrap itself around our hearts, keeping us tethered to moments we can’t change.
Regret
You see, regret is rather like a cage that holds our dreams captive. As long as we’re unable to release our grip on what might have been, it becomes nearly impossible to embrace what could be. I’ve been pondering this lately, especially as I journey through a mindset course — one that I’d previously passed up years ago. I’ve caught myself thinking, “If only I’d learned this sooner, I would be so much further ahead.” Does this thought feel familiar to you too?
But here’s what I’ve come to understand, sitting with these thoughts: I wasn’t ready to receive these lessons back then. The person I was wouldn’t have fully grasped or treasured what was being taught. Sometimes, the influences around us can cloud our judgment, making it difficult to hear what we truly need. I experienced this firsthand — one particular friendship affected how I viewed my own growth, and it wasn’t until I created some distance that I could finally hear my own inner voice. (If this resonates with you, you will find nuggets in Episode 12 of Living Inside Out, where I dive deeper into Toxic Friendships.)
What I Learned
Here’s what I learned about regret, and I want you to hold them close to your heart:
- While regret might feel logical, it serves no purpose other than keeping us anchored in the past.
- Be mindful of the voices and influences in your life — some may be building walls between who you are now and who you’re meant to become.
- Every experience, even the ones that make us wince, has prepared us for what lies ahead. You are precisely where you need to be to learn what’s next.
If you’re feeling ready to move beyond regret and step into clarity, I’d love for you to join me on Episode 101 of Living Inside Out: “A New Chapter: Looking Back, Moving Forward.” In this episode, I open up about my own journey of stepping back, not just from the podcast, but from life itself when burnout caught up with me. In that stillness, I discovered some of my most valuable lessons about faith, growth, and the vital importance of caring for ourselves. I guarantee you’ll go from feeling weighed down by the past to feeling empowered and equipped to move forward with purpose.
